Polymer manufactures require high-purity monomers (polymer grade feedstocks). Impurities in feedstock significantly affect catalyst activity and functionality, lowering polymer yield and quality. Therefore olefins from an FCC unit or steam crackers could be treated by adsorbents to remove many contaminants and meet the high-purity requirements of the feedstock.
Impurities which can be removed via adsorption from propylene are oxygen compounds (Water, CO2 Alcohols, Aldehydes, Ethers, Carbonyls, Ketones, Peroxides, Oxygen), sulphur compounds (COS, H2S, Sulphides, Mercaptans), nitrogen (Ammonia, Amines, Nitriles) and other (Arsine, Phosphine, Mercury).
The Propylene Purification Unit (PPU) effectively removes wide range of catalyst poisons by using different types of adsorbents – Molecular sieves, Hybrid adsorbents, Non-regenerable metal oxide/sulphide products.
Number of adsorbent vessels and the proper selection and combination of adsorbents depends on the applications and feed conditions. The PPU design can be also optimized for required regeneration cycle and required lifetime of non-regenerable adsorbents.
The PPU module consists of Adsorption vessels, Pump station, Regeneration/ Reduction station, On-line analysers (O2, moisture), Filtration unit and PLC unit (optional) and can be operated (including regeneration/reduction procedures) fully automatically or manually. The PPU can be “modularized” and supplied in transportable modules and installed upstream of the polymerization plant.
In the pictures can be seen the PPU with flowrate 40 m3/h incorporated into unloading/storage area of the petrochemical plant.
